Bob Holman reports on the informal 10km swim on 9 September 2012:
“As dawn broke, the mist was already clearing to reveal a fine clear blue sky. It was the day of the big swim, our East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club 10 km swim from Fisherman’s Walk at Southbourne to Sandbanks. We were to meet at chalet 1168 courtesy of Mark and Ali and a motley crew of 14 swimmers were about to take to the water.
“We were blessed with fine weather for the third year running. Who said that the sun always shined on the righteous!
I”n a staggered start, first into the water was Ann, Janis, Hannah and Mark. With a big splash they were away! These intrepid swimmers were soon followed by Kirsten, Yvonne, Bob H, Andy and Bob S and then Denzil, Mark, Richard and Stuart.
“Some fine swims were recorded despite the feeling that the tide did not favour the swimmers during the second half after Bournemouth Pier. Everyone swam really well with Mark, Richard and Stuart taking the honour of equal fastest swim of the day in 2 hours 59 minutes.
“The American supper was greatly enjoyed by all after the swim. Many thanks to Angela, Jane and Gerry for some outstanding organisation!
“Well done to everyone who took part and we hope to see you again next year.”
