ASA East Region Open Water Championships 2009

Sunday 19 July 2009 – Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre, Norwich

The first race of the day was the 5k event won by the Mid Beds Swim Squad duo of Aydin Berki and Harriet Brettle. Samuel Munro (St Felix School) was second in the men’s race with James Mitchell of Thurrock SC in third. In the women’s event Sophie Chamberlain from St Felix School was second and Alice Marchant of Mid Beds Swim squad was third.

In the 3k event, Caleb Hughes (Mid Beds Swim Squad) won the 13-16 years age group and posted the fastest time of all the swimmers. Anthony White (City of Peterborough SC) won the 17-19 years age group, Colin Keast (Hitchin SC) the 20-24 years age group, Chris Doughty (Leiston & District SC) the 30-34 years age group, Roger Duncombe (Halstead SC) the 40-49 years age group, Ian Murray of Flitwick Dolphins the 50-59 years age group and Stuart McLellan of Sudbury & District the over 60 age category.

In the women’s 3k, Jennifer Titterington from West Suffolk SC won the 13-16 years age group, Fenella Foskett (Deben SC) the 17-19 years age group, Philippa Dyer of Halstead SC the 25-29 years age group, Giovanni Bertoldi of UEA City of Norwich SC the 35-39 years age group and Samantha Fulcher from Deben SC the 40-49 years age group.

The 1.5k race was won by Lawrence Lowman of Hatfield SC in 18:31.90. Lowman also won the 20-24 years age group. The 12-16 years winner was Matthew Winnell of Runnymede SC, the 17-19 years winner was Thomas Olive of Hadleigh Dolphins SC, Truan Death of Hadleigh Dolphins won the 25-29 years category with Kern Death of Hadleigh winning the 30-34 years. The 40-49 years was won by Andrew Rose of Diss Otters with Stuart Jago (Runnymede SC) winning the 50-59 years and Donald MacFarlane of West Norfolk SC winning the over 60’s.

The fastest swim in the women’s 1.5k was by Joanne Longland of City of Peterborough SC who won the 12-16 years category, in a time of 20:33.30. Jessica Ford from Thurrock SC won the 17-19 years age group, Kirsty Lewis of West Norfolk SC won the 25-29 years age group, Sharon Perry of West Suffolk SC won the 35-39 years age group, Jenny Mayne of UEA City of Norwich won the 40-49 years age group and Sharon McLellan from Sudbury SC won the 50-59 years category.

The shortest race of the day, the 800m, saw a winning time of 11:20.94 from Josh Page of UEA City of Norwich SC as he took the 15-16 years title. Brandon Nabarro of Mid Beds Swim Squad won the 11-12 years category, Gareth Hawkins from Thurrock SC won the 13-14 years age group and Liam Jamieson from Mildenhall & District SC won the 17+ age group.

In the women’s 800m, Shannon Harrold from Thurrock SC won a close race in 10:25.88 to take the 17+ age group. The winner of the 15-16 years age group, Molly Epsly of Thurrock SC, swam the course in 10:27.75. The 11-12 years winner was Cassie Everill of Lowestoft & Oulton Broad SC and the 13-14 years winner was Karla Hutchinson (teamipswich SC).

The team event was won by Mid Beds Swim Squad.
