DEFRA is seeking views on proposals to update the Government’s strategy for the inland waterways of England and Wales.
“Waterways for Everyone” updates “Waterways for Tomorrow”, which when published in 2000 represented the first comprehensive government statement on the inland waterways for 30 years. “Waterways for Everyone” sets out how waterways and their surroundings can contribute to a wide range of public benefits and embraces the pressing policy agendas of today, covering climate change, social inclusion and cohesion and public health. It also takes account of changes in the organisations responsible for delivering policy.
What this means for sport and recreation
This is an opportunity to make sport and recreation a delivery priority for inland waterways in England and Wales. DEFRA is looking for examples of the benefits that these activities can deliver, what needs to be done to encourage all those who benefit from the waterways to contribute to their upkeep and how we can work together to secure a sustainable future for the waterways.
